Ismail Fajrie Alatas is a doctoral candidate in Anthropology and History at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is also a graduate student research fellow at the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. He received his B.A. (Hons) from the University of Melbourne, Australia and M.A. from the National University of Singapore. His latest book, Al-Rashafat: Percikan Cinta para Kekasih (Bentang 2013), is an Indonesian translation and commentary of an eighteenth century Ḥaḍramī Sufi Poem. He has written two other books in Indonesian and several articles published in Die Welt des Islams, Journal of Islamic Studies, Studia Islamika, and the Encyclopaedia of Islam. His current research explores Sufi sainthood the tumult of religious belief in Central Java, Indonesia.
