The Board of Governors of the Middle East Institute expresses its shock and outrage at the disappearance and possible murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Mr Khashoggi was a friend of the Institute and a frequent participant in its public panels and conferences. The Institute believes strongly in the importance and sanctity of free speech and diversity of opinion, and MEI was one of the platforms where Jamal could engage other thinkers and colleagues in fruitful discussion about issues relating to Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. The board calls on the authorities of Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United States to act swiftly to bring out the truth about what happened to Mr. Khashoggi and to hold accountable those responsible.
